FAITH

Some Greek Definitions

VERB: Pisteuo (4100) – to believe, trust, trust in, to put faith in, to rely upon a person or thing (by implication to obey). Entrusting, committed into safe-keeping. This implies RELATIONSHIP with someone.

NOUN: Pistis (4102) – to trust in, faith. The knowledge of and trust in a relationship. [Includes TRUE SPIRITUAL FAITH]

ADJECTIVE: Pistos (4103) – Faithful, trusty, true, believing

[Oligopistos (3640) – little faith.].

These are derived from 3982/peithô, "persuade, be persuaded") – properly, persuasion (be persuaded, come to trust); faith.

Types of FAITH.

HUMAN NATURAL FAITH

Innate Faith. This is the human mind’s capacity to believe in one’s own capability to believe something - mind over matter. One can persist to allow the body to heal itself, but one can’t heal oneself – by perseverance, determination and grit. Human faith can fail. Fear is negative faith –more faith in the enemy, rather than in God.

Sense knowledge. Human faith relies on experiential knowledge, logic, and the five senses. In some cases, human faith has the capacity to believe in someone else’s capacity. Most of the healing in the Gospels is sense knowledge. This type has to have some type of intervention and ‘point of contact’ e.g. laying on of hands.

TRUE SPIRITUAL FAITH – Supernatural Faith Full Assurance In The Heart

Hebrews 11: 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

The God kind of faith is born in the spirit – the invisible over the visible. It stands on the . God’s faith DOES NOT FAIL. It is persistent (doesn’t give up) and determines what will be received. True supernatural or Spiritual faith allows you to rest in what God has already done for you. Faith is a bridge from the physical world to the spiritual world. It allows the true things available in the spiritual world to be made manifest in the physical. This comes from ‘revelation’ in the heart. This type of faith believes the over the senses.

JESUS TEACHING ON FAITH

Faith in our true relationship with God should be involved in our day-to-day life.

Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.[i]

A carnal mindset limits answers – Little Faith

1. “Take no thought” by “saying” (doubting) is described as LITTLE FAITH. Worry words expressing ANXIETY release authority in the negative.

Matt 6:30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore, take no thought, saying What shall we eat, or what shall we we drink, or wherewithal shall we be clothed?

2. Faith is not subject to nature. FEAR is the opposite of faith. Fear and Faith COEXIST.

Faith can alter potential consequences of nature. Change the path of cyclones.

Matthew 8: 24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

3. Faith is affected by changing focus from spiritual to the temporal; leads to DOUBT.

Matthew 14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

4. Faith is limited by HUMAN REASONING.

Matthew 16:5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

Natural Faith acts according to its conviction.

Matthew 9:28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

30 And their eyes were opened;

Faith can receive from God with no pre-conditions – Not dependent on certain works.

Matthew 9:20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:

21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.

22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Her revelation – the promises of God are ‘yea and amen’. [2 Corinthians 1:20]

Great faith recognises the authority of the WORD over the senses.

Matthew 8:5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Lu 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Speak –the word of God has power – Jesus has done the healing, but our job is to speak the word so God’s power in His word can be released.

Matthew 21: 21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall SAY unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Every word of God has the power within itself to fulfil itself, but the word needs to be spoken. God uses people to speak His word. We speak the word, the word of God does the healing.

Faith in the knowledge of and trust in in the relationship of what Jesus has accomplished already for us, not God Himself, establishes what will be received.

Matthew 9: 28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

30 And their eyes were opened;

SPIRITUAL FAITH – SUPERNATURAL FAITH

Spiritual Faith is always a gift of God

Spiritual Faith (4102/pistis) is always a gift from God, and never something that can be worked up by human effort. It is “God’s divine persuasion” – and while it is distinct from human belief, it involves it. The Lord continuously reveals in the Spirit-filled believer His will (one ‘hears’ His voice) so that the believer can know what His preference is.

Spiritual faith is a warranty or guarantee of the total fulfilment of the revelation, and once revealed, will come to pass as God has planned.

Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

2 Thessalonians 1: 11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this [HIS] calling, and fulfil all [HIS] the good pleasure of [HIS] goodness, and the work of faith with [HIS] power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Faith is a fruit of the Spirit

Gal 5: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Faith gives us the victory.

1 John 5: 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Hebrews 6:12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Romans 3: 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Romans 5: 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Romans 4: 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

The Works of Faith Can Be Seen. They are Made Manifest. Works follow Faith.

Mt 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

[James 2: 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.]

Faith is the currency of heaven.

1Pe 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

If the word comes from God into your heart, He will make the way for you.

Operating in FAITH

Faith is powerful – you have to SAY (Plant faith by saying it)

Luke 17:5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

EVERYONE is dealt THE MEASURE of FAITH

Romans 12: 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

GIFTS OF GOD THAT ACCOMPANY THE RECEIVING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

1. The Faith of the Son of GOD –Justification and Righteousness; Christ in us.

Galatians 2: 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Galatians 2: 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Ro 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

2. The Mind of Christ – You know all things. The Holy Spirit enlightens the word to us.

1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

1 Corinthians 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

So What Limits Christians in Getting the Victory through Prayer?

1. Relying solely on human faith.

2. Failure to comprehend the SPIRIT MAN. Living in the flesh-soul realm rather than the soul-spirit realm. [Not relying upon the true relationship we have in Christ.]

Phm 1:6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the

acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

3. Failure to let the WORD of God take root in our hearts. [Relationship failure]

Parable of the sower and the seed

Mark 4: 13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?

14 The sower soweth the word.

15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.

18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,

19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

The word has to produce fruit for the Law of Faith to operate.

James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

One must hear, and hear, and hear, and act on the hearing.

To Operate in true Faith.

1. Plant the seed. Use the seed you have. ‘SAY’ – speak true faith.

2. Renew the mind. - If we have not conquered a situation, and though our belief system might seem right, we may not be in a place of truth faith. We need to have a better understanding of faith. It is not a mental ascent. [Can’t fake it to make it!!]

Jude 20 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

1 Corinthians 14: 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

3. Then need to receive Revelation Knowledge in the heart

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Faith is the revelation of the will of God in the heart of man which produces certainty, conviction and action. ( Barry Bennett)

4. ACT on the revelation knowledge. The temporal obeys the spiritual; moves from visible to invisible; tangible obeys spiritual; everything submits to the WORD.

If you are ill, speak to the body – it has to obey. Need the revelation in the spirit.

[It shouldn’t be a surprise that these things obey you!]

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the [rhema] word of God.

So Faith comes from hearing (Natural faith) and hearing by a word in the spirit (Spiritual Faith). [Begins with vision – sees a positive result]. C/f Spiritual hearing vs natural hearing. God’s word [rhema] is implanted in the heart, and determines what you say. [Your words don’t determine your faith – your faith determines your words]. Jesus only spoke what He heard from His Father.

John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

In Summary, to obtain the major things:

1. Get a fresh specific [rhema] word from God. [Romans 10:17]

2. Be in right relationship with God. Need CORRECT knowledge.

Here we are operating in the spiritual realm. Remembering that God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth [John 4:24].

It is useful to compare the prayer requests in Daniel. In Chapter 9 the request was answered immediately, but in Chapter 10 another request was delayed three weeks because the ‘Prince-of-Persia’ – a demonic power opposed the request.

Ephesians 6: 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

3. BELIEVE when you pray – [Don’t wait to receive before believing]. Believe you receive; Doubt, you do without. Ask once, [1 John 5:14], he hears. If your prayer doesn’t seem to be manifest, it is not that God hasn’t heard and acted, there may be interference in the spiritual realm to be overcome [Ephesians 6:12], or there may be a lack of faith.

Mark 11: 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Ongoing maintenance of Faith.

Romans 12: 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2 Cor 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

2Co 13:4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.

5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Col 2: 5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
